Mold is caused by fungal spores which are naturally occurring in the environment and are commonly found in everyday household or workplace dust. Therefore mold spores may easily be deposited on products or materials and if/when the conditions are right they can thrive and multiply to form colonies. These colonies are single organisms comprised of identical nuclei that can spread over the surface of a product such as footwear creating unsightly blooms.

When this occurs between manufacturing and arrival at the final retail destination this can render the product unsellable so that remedial action is required to make it saleable, and in the worst cases the product can be damaged beyond repair. The conditions which encourage mold growth are warmth, moisture, and a source of nourishment. The latter may be provided by the materials of the product itself, such as leather or fabric. The moisture may be present in the materials or in the environment particularly when the weather is humid. The warmth can also be an environmental factor.

Clearly when products are manufactured in tropical climates including many parts of the Far East, ideal conditions for mold growth often exist so it is important to take steps to prevent it. The time period between manufacturing and retail is often 2-3 months or longer, and this is ample time for mold colonies to grow. This time includes the shipping and storage before and after shipping. Footwear shipped from the Far East can typically spend up to 2 months sealed in a shipping container – a stable environment with little or no ventilation, and this is perfect for mold growth.
